BUMC is on a journey to be a positive force for racial reconciliation in our broken world. We have committed to providing educational opportunities for our congregation and community to equip us for this effort. A Time to Learn facilitates web-based presentations and discussions aimed at generating practical strategies for understanding and combating racism as it manifests in our institutions, policies, beliefs, and practices. We invite you to access and share these resources on this important topic.

As we respond to the challenge to educate ourselves about racism and racial justice, we hear the call to teach our young people to be allies. Without intentional intervention, white children absorb our culture’s messages of systemic racism and prejudice. Panelists will draw on their education and experiences—as well as the book Raising White Kids: Bringing up Children in a Racially Unjust America (Jennifer Harvey)—to offer strategies for initiating age-appropriate conversations and antiracist actions with white kids. The webinar panel will be July 7, 7:30-9 pm (CT) and a discussion of related texts will be on July 14, 7:30-9 pm (CT). More information on the discussion will be provided to registrants. The webinar (but not the discussion) will be recorded and made available.
