Ash Wednesday Service

February 18 @ 6:45 PM - 7:45 PM

You are invited to join us on Wednesday, February 18th at 6:45pm in our Melrose Sanctuary or at BUMCOnline.org for a time to reflect and prepare our hearts for the Lenten season.

Ash Wednesday marks the beginning of the season of Lent—a sacred time when Christians prepare their hearts for Easter through prayer, fasting, repentance, moderation, and/or spiritual discipline.

This service centers on two powerful themes: our human sinfulness and our mortality. Ash Wednesday invites us to honestly face both, while also remembering that neither has the final word. Through the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ, sin and death have been overcome.

Ashes are an ancient and meaningful symbol in the life of faith. In Genesis, we are reminded that God formed humanity from the dust of the earth (Genesis 2:7), and later declares, “You are dust, and to dust you shall return” (Genesis 3:19). Throughout Scripture, ashes are used as a sign of repentance, humility, and a longing for forgiveness. The ashes used in this service are made by burning the palms from last year’s Palm Sunday, connecting the journey from celebration to the cross.

As ashes are imposed, we come before God acknowledging our humanity, confessing our sin, and opening ourselves to God’s transforming grace. This service invites us to remember who we are—and who, by God’s grace, we are becoming.

Childcare will be available for children ages 4 and under.
